I found this far less sensitive, sharp, or well written than the trilogy’s first book, Dawn. Dawn, I adored, and was screaming for more when it concluded! Adulthood Rites, I enjoyed, but was rather glad when it was over.
The writing of Dawn was smooth, philosophically and intellectually interesting, and well-paced. Adulthood Rites continued the plot, but not the fascination. And, I don’t know if it was just me, but the dialog and even exposition felt rough and could have used an editor and another draft or two. Ah well. I’ll continue on to finish the trilogy, but with less enthusiasm than I began it with.
