Out of the Silent Planet

The Space Trilogy
I read it June of 2012!
5 stars!

Wondrous!

Everything about this Ransom’s adventure to the planet Malacandra is wondrous! From the lush, coherent descriptions of the planet’s geography, language, and creatures, to the thoughtful meditations on space, light, humans, and god [or God, as the case may be], Lewis has crafted a beautiful world.

I read this when I was 13, and 14 years later, it is even more enjoyable than I remembered it! I’m not Christian, but come from a Christian background, and one of the things I found delightful about this and its sequel, Perelandra, is how Lewis develops an intricate metaphysics and explanation of a spirit world that expands on while being consistent with Christian doctrine. That said, there is no explicit “Christianity” in this book, and it should be perfectly enjoyable whatever your views.

One of the big themes of this is xenophobia, and Lewis beautifully demonstrates Ransom’s growth and breakdown of his own fears and human biases.

I think more than most books, “Out of the Silent Planet” left me with a sense of curiosity and fascination with both the world of Malacandra and our own world.
